About the blog

This rambling blog is about building a couple of simple layouts in HO, the available space is rather small but the prototype was not built on the grand scale, most rural stations were merely a curved loop and a siding, which is easy to replicate.

Return of the K.Bay.Sts.B - Locos Pt1

When the larger layout is rebuilt, it would be interesting to include some 'foreign' locos to the roster as the supposed location is somewhere South East of Frankfurt in the Spessart. This is a Mittelgebirge, a range of low wooded mountains, between Bavaria and Hesse, it is bordered by the Vogelsberg, Rhön and Odenwald.

The G5/5H seems particularly appropriate as the class was designed for the hilly Spessart area. The Bavarian G 5/5 was the most powerful, ten-coupled locomotive of all the German state railways (Länderbahnen). In this respect it was far superior to the Prussian G 10 and even the Prussian G 12 was unable to match it.

Whilst the S3/5N is a visitor from Nürnberg

Both are Trix but a world apart in terms of engineering, the G5/5 is a modern product of the Matrix group wheras the S3/5 is a 30 year old Trix Fine Art brass loco, one of the very few small brass locos that actually works.
