About the blog

This rambling blog is about building a couple of simple layouts in HO, the available space is rather small but the prototype was not built on the grand scale, most stations were merely a curved loop and a siding.

Fränkischen Wohnhaus

Last year we visited  the museum at Bad Windsheim, it consists of a large number of rural buildings that have been relocated and rebuilt in their original state. The tiny size of the dwellings is a revelation as is the lack of bright colours and utilitarian design.

It provides an insight into the appearance of Franken prior to the mid 20th century without UPVC double glazing, paved roads etc.  The Fränkischen Wohnhaus is one of the exhibits, please note the size of the building compared to the person.

A Faller starter kit provides a reasonable basis, the outside has been dulled with a wash of sepia artist's ink and all the wood work has been toned down to replicate oil-treated wood, only the window shutters need to be added. As a rule, only earth-pigments are used - bright reds, blues, yellows etc are best avoided.
