K10 Raynes Park 26th Sept 1948
A Brief History.
A batch of 40 Drummond K10s were built at Nine Elms works between 1901-1902 for mixed traffic work there they earned the nickname “Small Hoppers.”
These K10s were mainly paired with 6 wheel tenders because of their intended short journeys although some carries the larger 8-wheel water cart tenders.
The Hoppers had quite a turn of speed, despite their 5'7" wheels, though the larger L11s were more popular with crews because their larger fireboxes gave better steaming. The vacuum brake lacked power, requiring a great deal of care when working loose-coupled goods trains. On straight track, they were firm on their feet but pointwork quickly had them dancing. Drummond's sanding arrangement for tender-first working was crude - a sandbox in the cab on the fireman's side only, the fireman had to scoop up the sand by hand from the sandbox and feed it onto the rail.

The main withdrawal started at the end of Southern days in 1947, 31 entered British Railway stock at nationalisation when withdrawal was so rapid. In 1948, two 30146 and S387 were allocated to 71C Dorchester shed. Only 30382 received BR numbering whilst 389 was the last to be withdrawn in July of 1951 from Yeovil town shed.
